Music videos


This is a summary of what we have learnt about music videos so far.

music video: a short film that integrates a song with imagery, and produced for promotional or artistic purposes.

The main conventions of mainstream music videos:
  • set in urban areas 
  • feature 'real' people facing adversity and hardship
  • narrative with elements of perfomance
  • set as a representation of society at the time
  • diverse represenntations
  • elements of struggle and hardship
  • set in urban area

The main conventions of alternative music videos :
  • artist doesn't appear 
  • conceptual narrative
  • set in subrban areas
  • limited representations/ lack of diversity
  • may contain a sinister element

some music videos may pay homage to another media text this is called intertextuality, some examples include:


Cohen's moral panic:
"moral panics have been described as a condition, episode , person or group which emerge to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests " - e.g. terrorists or young people.
